A "hit" new sports club at Liberty

Liberty High School has several options for sports, but did you know that before 2022 badminton wasn't one of them? In August of 2022, the Badminton Club was created by its current President, Alyssa Tagle; the current Vice President and social media manager Ella Follett; and Marie Bousso, the current secretary. Together, these students decided to start the club due to the absence of badminton at Liberty. The 22-23 advisor of the club was Mr. McGuire, who held the meetings last school year.

The meetings took place monthly. The club was faced with the pressure of being a brand-new club, and being a sports club in the middle of fall and winter. President Alyssa Tagle stated that "It was a bit difficult to learn the official logistics that go into running a club. We went through lots of trial and error planning our club structure."

During the fall and winter seasons last year, the officers attempted to host playing sessions, but it was extremely difficult due to the inconsistent weather patterns. From the floods in Southern California to the rain in the central coast, it was very difficult to play outside. Most playing sessions ended up being held in February and March.

This school year, the advisor is science teacher Mr. Brewer. The first meeting was on August 30th and went over the purpose of the club and logistics. The club's purpose is to be a safe environment for students to enjoy the sport of badminton, no matter their skill level. This year, the club is aiming to have more playing sessions. Alyssa Tagle elaborates on this, saying that "We also have a couple of events in the works, such as collaborative competitions with Heritage's Badminton Club."

Their playing sessions are typically held at parks, and the club provides all of the equipment including nets, rackets, and birdies.
