Diversity with teachers is important, because if students didn’t grow up knowing about various cultures, they could learn more about them from a teacher or staff member. Cultural competency and achievement are promoted by diversity.
Openness and enthusiasm for learning from and about people who are different, especially in elementary or middle schools, is fueled by diversity. It can teach younger kids to appreciate and support members of diverse groups. Diversity also helps students think critically about their own beliefs and perspectives, work well with others, and develop cultural respect. A diverse teacher workforce benefits all students, particularly students of color.
School diversity can be increased by hiring more staff, or having speakers at club meetings. For instance, an African American speaker at a Black Student Union club meeting. This could also apply to Culture Shock, Latinos Unidos club, Muslim Student Association club, and Filo club. In addition, having teachers or staff who are good teachers and able to share stories of their culture would enhance diversity on school campuses.
Morelli Alosondo, a Spanish teacher at Liberty High School, said, “I feel that having diversity among teachers is an important thing at Liberty for the students because, some student can look at Mr. Oji or Mrs. Dreif and think wow they can accomplish all these things then I can too and not be stereotyped. It's also really cool that we have diversity in the World Language department. Like Mr. Carey teaching Spanish 3, and I think it’s also good that he can do that and show his students if they ever want to become a teacher, they can teach whatever they want, no matter their ethnicity.”
Diversity is crucial for schools to have. Having different cultures and ethnicities among staff at school, or any workplace, can educate on the different cultures or can know more about their culture.
