The expensive nature of senior year

People constantly talk about how exciting senior year and all its experience are. But they forgot to mention how expensive all of it is.

As a senior, this year has been full of memories and opportunities to take. However, it has been hard to make these memories when everything costs so much with these experiences. It’s one thing after another and so many seniors are having trouble coming up with the money to pay for them. Most of the things we must pay for are optional, besides cap and gown, which is $65 and up. But to participate in the optional elements is pricey: senior ball ticket: $55; senior pictures: $240-670, senior field trip: $75/85; and senior weekend: $100-$500. Although these aren’t mandatory to pay for, many people don’t want to miss out while everyone else joins in on the fun.

Other people may argue that they didn’t want to go in the first place or others will say that it isn’t a lot of money and could be worse. Yes, pricing could be worse, but it has unfortunately still become a barrier for many and is seen as “ridiculous” according to Tabatha Maurer, a senior student here at Liberty.

After adding up the events and items we need or have the option to pay for, the total comes out to over $1000. This is not something every family can easily spare, but I am glad it is not above this number and so are many others. I think the school or other services/people should make and allow things to be a little cheaper if they are unreasonably priced or easily fixable.

Alternatives to this issue depending on what part you are paying for could be carpooling for senior weekend, and splitting gas/hotel pricing with friends. For senior ball attire, you can look at cheaper options and stores, or even borrowing or renting your outfit. Lastly, for senior pictures, you can always find college students who are aspiring photographers and are looking to advance their portfolio.

Senior year is full of memories to congratulate yourself for the past 12-14 years; you have been working hard for that moment when you grab your diploma and start a new journey for yourself. If you are a senior or upcoming junior who is struggling to pay these but don’t want to miss out, always look for alternatives or ask around and see what’s best for your situation; there may be people who can help.
