Campus closure poses complications

Updated: Aug 21, 2019

Since the passage of Liberty Union High School District Measure U Bond, construction has rapidly begun at Liberty High School, despite class still being in session. Construction has already initiated on Liberty’s ageing sports stadium and complexes, however the majority of the work to be done on Liberty’s academic campus has yet to begin.

As soon as the final bell rings, marking the end of the 2018-2019 school year, construction teams will flood Liberty’s campus to carry out massive renovation projects. Projects like the partial relocation of the J Wing to the lot adjacent to the T Wing, groundbreaking on new tennis courts and an aquatic center, and much needed maintenance on classrooms, including their air conditioning units and electrical amenities will be the center of activity on Liberty’s campus.

Due to the scale of this enormous project, Liberty’s campus, which typically remains open to certain groups and teams over summer, will be closed for the sake of the construction’s efficiency and safety. This inconvenience may spell hardship for teachers preparing for the next year, as well as student activities that run throughout the summer. Mr. Cornwell, Liberty’s yearbook adviser and PADA chairman states “[Over summer I spend] about 60 hours [working on campus] and since I’m not here at the end of the year I have to come in and clean as well. It’ll be slower, most likely we won't be ready for students. We will have to stay longer to get ready for you guys. I won’t be able to get my stuff printed and ready to go.”

The campus closure will complicate the lives of teachers, and this lack of summer preparation will ultimately spill over into the school year, starting off the year on a rough patch. The time teachers usually spent over summer to prepare for the next year, will not be available, and the already overworked teachers will have to spend long hours at the beginning of the year to make up for lost time. The construction at Liberty will be widely welcomed, but with sacrifice will come hardships.
