Is there a doctor in the White House? Not if you mansplain

There are plenty of perfect ways to offer criticism; it starts in the classroom with being taught to raise your hand politely and pose a question. But addressing the First Lady as “kiddo” in a published article for the Washington Post? That’s, arguably, not a method you’d pick up from your teacher.

So where exactly did writer Joseph Epstein pick up these downright embarrassing methods of mansplaining that are exhibited in his article (see “Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an M.D.”)? And why does he, among many others, feel so inclined to strip Dr. Biden of her title?

For clarity, the definition of a doctoral degree is as follows: “advanced graduate or professional degrees that demonstrate mastery in a particular subject area.” (www.thebestschools.org) While Epstein states that “no one should call himself ‘Dr.” unless he has delivered a child,” not one single explanation of a doctoral degree can be found containing-- or interpreted in such a way that implies-- anything regarding pregnancy or labor.

The doctors Epstein must be referring to are the brave souls manning hospitals, whereas Dr. Jill Biden is a teacher. What doesn’t appear to be connecting for him and many others is that the term “Dr.” isn’t exclusive to just midwives and those assisting a birth. As with many other heinous demands made by those who are uncomfortable with the rising position of women in society, this claim is likely rooted in a childish discomfort and unwillingness to admit to ignorance.

“All too often, our accomplishments are met with skepticism, even derision,” states Michelle Obama in an Instagram post regarding the situation. “We’re doubted by those who choose the weakness of ridicule over the strength of respect.”

And Dr. Biden still draws doubt, even after her years at the University of Delaware for a bachelor’s degree and a doctoral degree, Villanova University for a master’s degree, and West Chester University of Pennsylvania for another master’s degree.

To put it frankly, and in terms Mr. Epstein will understand: No, kiddo, it is not up to successful women to sugarcoat their achievements to make yours look better. It is our jobs as citizens and growing people to expand our views and understand facts before we begin to hurl opinions.
